Care instructions for

Tradescantia

Tradescantia is a genus of 85 species of herbaceous perennial wildflowers in the family Commelinaceae, native to the Americas from southern Canada to northern Argentina, including the West Indies. Members of the genus are known by many common names, including inchplant, wandering jew, spiderwort, dayflower and trad.

Light

• Provide: Bright, indirect light is ideal.
• Avoid: Direct sunlight can scorch the leaves.
• Watch for: Lack of light will cause the colors to fade and the plant to become leggy.

Water

• Watering: Water when the top 1-2 inches of soil feel dry.
• Avoid: Do not let the leaves get wet, as this can cause them to brown. Bottom watering is a good method to avoid wetting the leaves.

Soil & Fertilizer

• Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix to prevent root rot.
• Feed monthly during the growing season (spring through fall) with a half-strength liquid fertilizer.

Humidity & Temperature

• Keep in a warm room between 60−75°𝐹(15−24°𝐶) and avoid drafts from air conditioners or heaters.
• Normal household humidity is often sufficient, but you can mist the leaves or use a humidifier if the tips turn brown.

Other Care Tips

• These plants grow quickly and may need repotting every six months to a year as they become root-bound.
• Regularly trim stems to keep the plant compact and encourage bushier growth.
• Use cuttings to fill out the pot or to create new plants.
