Care instructions for
Philodendron Florida Ghost
The Philodendron Florida Ghost is a sought-after, hybrid climbing philodendron known for its distinctive foliage that emerges ghostly white and slowly matures to a deep green. It is a mutation of the Philodendron Florida and is an easy-to-care-for houseplant that prefers bright, indirect light. The plant is a vining variety with deeply lobed leaves, and its petioles (leaf stalks) are often red and hairy, providing an interesting contrast to the leaves.
Light
• Provide bright, indirect light to maintain the vibrant variegation; direct sunlight can scorch the leaves and cause the variegation to fade. A spot near an east-facing window is ideal, or a south-facing window with a sheer curtain.
Water
• Allow the top 1-2 inches of soil to dry out completely between waterings. Water thoroughly, ensuring excess water drains from the bottom of the pot, and avoid letting the pot sit in standing water. The plant is sensitive to overwatering.
Soil & Fertilizer
• Use a well-draining, aerated potting mix that is rich in organic matter. A mix containing components like orchid bark, perlite, and a small amount of peat moss or coco coir works well to ensure good drainage.
• Feed with a diluted, balanced liquid fertilizer once a month during the active growing season (spring and summer). Avoid over-fertilizing, and do not fertilize in the fall and winter months.
Humidity & Temperature
• Maintain a consistent temperature between 65°F and 80°F (18°C to 27°C). Protect the plant from cold drafts, open windows, or direct blasts from A/C and heating vents.
• This philodendron enjoys moderate to high humidity levels (ideally 60% or more). You can increase humidity by misting occasionally, using a pebble tray with water, or placing the plant in a naturally humid room like a bathroom.
Other Care Tips
• Support: As a vining and climbing plant, it benefits from a support structure such as a moss pole or trellis. Training it to climb will encourage larger leaves and healthier growth.
• Pruning: Prune the plant in spring to control its shape and size, and to promote bushier growth. Regularly remove any yellow, brown, or damaged leaves year-round with clean, sharp shears.
• Repotting: Repot every 1-2 years to refresh the soil and provide more space for root growth.
• Pests: Common pests include mealybugs and spider mites. These can typically be managed with a neem oil solution.
