Care instructions for

Croton

Croton is an extensive plant genus in the spurge family, Euphorbiaceae. The plants of this genus were described and introduced to Europeans by Georg Eberhard Rumphius. The common names for this genus are rushfoil and croton, but the latter also refers to Codiaeum variegatum.

Light

• Bright, indirect light is ideal for maintaining vibrant leaf color.
• Too much direct sun can scorch the leaves, while too little can cause them to lose their color.

Water

• Water generously: when the top inch of soil feels dry, but ensure the pot has good drainage to prevent root rot.
• Avoid overwatering . Your croton prefers moist soil, but not constantly soggy conditions.
• Use room temperature water, as crotons are sensitive to cold.

Soil & Fertilizer

• Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the spring and summer growing season.

Humidity & Temperature

• Crotons thrive in humid environments, so mist the leaves regularly or place the pot on a tray with pebbles and water.
• Maintain warm temperatures between 60°F and 85°F.
• Keep the plant away from cold drafts from windows or air conditioners.

Other Care Tips

• Keep an eye out for common pests like spider mites, aphids, and mealybugs.
• Wipe the leaves: with a damp cloth regularly to remove dust and help control pests.
• Prune to encourage bushier growth or to remove dead or yellowing leaves.
• Wear gloves when pruning, as the sap from the plant can cause skin irritation.
