Care instructions for

Dracaena

Dracaena is a genus of about 200–220 species of trees and succulent shrubs. The formerly accepted genera Pleomele and Sansevieria are now included in Dracaena. In the APG IV classification system, it is placed in the family Asparagaceae, subfamily Convallarioideae.

Light

• Bright, indirect light: Place the plant in a spot with plenty of bright, filtered light.
• Tolerates low light: Dracaenas are forgiving and can also do well in lower light conditions, making them suitable for hallways.
• Avoid direct sun: Keep the plant out of direct, harsh sunlight to prevent scorching the leaves.

Water

• Allow soil to dry: Let the top few centimeters of soil dry out between waterings. Overwatering is a common cause of yellowing leaves and root rot.
• Reduce in winter: Water less frequently in the fall and winter when the plant's growth slows down.
• Use filtered water: Avoid using hard tap water, as the fluoride content can damage the foliage.

Soil & Fertilizer

• Well-draining soil: Use a free-draining potting mix to prevent waterlogging.
• Fertilize lightly: Feed every few weeks during the spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength. Fertilizing is not needed in the winter.

Humidity & Temperature

• Ideal temperature: Dracaenas thrive in average room temperatures between 65−80∘F(18−27∘C)
• Avoid cold: Keep them away from cold drafts from windows or doors, and protect them from temperatures below 55∘F(13∘C)
• Average humidity: They are fine with average household humidity but appreciate occasional misting. Low humidity can cause dry, brown leaf tips.

Other Care Tips

• Prune: Remove any yellow or wilted leaves with clean pruning shears. If the plant gets too tall, you can cut the stem to encourage new growth.
• Clean leaves: Dust the leaves with a damp cloth periodically to help the plant absorb light.
• Repot: Repot every few years into a pot that is only one size larger when the roots are crowded. Spring is the best time to repot.
