Care instructions for
Staghorn Fern
Platycerium is a genus of about 18 fern species in the polypod family, Polypodiaceae. Ferns in this genus are widely known as staghorn or elkhorn ferns due to their uniquely shaped fronds. This genus is epiphytic and is native to tropical and temperate areas of South America, Africa, Southeast Asia, Australia, and New Guinea.
Light
• Provide bright, indirect light; direct sun can burn the fronds.
• An east-facing window is often ideal, or a bright spot that avoids harsh afternoon sun.
• For outdoor growing, place the plant in a shady spot during the summer.
Water
• Water thoroughly and allow the growing medium to dry out between waterings to prevent root rot.
• For mounted ferns, soak the base in water for 10-20 minutes, then let it dry.
• Water the base of the plant, not the fronds, to avoid leaf diseases.
• Increase watering in spring and summer, and decrease it in fall and winter when growth slows.
Soil & Fertilizer
• Feed monthly with a balanced liquid fertilizer (e.g., 1:1:1 ratio) during the active growing season (spring and summer).
• Fertilize every other month during cooler periods.
• Mature ferns may only need to be fertilized once or twice a year.
Humidity & Temperature
• Staghorn ferns thrive in high humidity, ideally around 60-75%.
• Increase humidity by misting fronds regularly, especially during drier months.
• Place the fern in a bathroom or near a humidifier.
Other Care Tips
• The brown, dry ""shield"" fronds at the base are normal and should not be removed. They provide nutrients and collect organic matter.
• The brown, velvety material on the underside of the long fronds is a normal part of the plant's reproductive cycle and should not be removed.
• Bring the plant indoors before nighttime temperatures consistently drop below 50−60∘𝐹
